Care you should take when making contactless payments

If you usually make contactless payments, even though it is a simpler and more convenient process, it is necessary to be careful so that it does not become a problem.

Paying with a bank card contactless is faster, as you just need to take the card out of your pocket and pass it through the ATM terminal.

However, "simplicity also brings warnings and if there is no caution, the most inattentive can be deceived," as reported in the Notícias ao Minuto the warning from the Bank of Spain.

The bank then alerts to a gesture that should not be forgotten when making payments with this feature. That is: always confirm the amount to be paid.

It is common, in a hurry, to only present the card or the mobile phone to pay, without confirming the transaction amount. This incurs the risk of being defrauded, or even paying a higher amount than supposed by the merchant.

However, the Bank of Spain also indicates other precautions you should follow to not lose track of contactless payments and avoid being deceived:

  • “When making a contactless payment, when you bring your phone or card close, check the amount displayed on the screen and make sure it is correct”.
  • Keep the store receipt. This way, you can make sure the amount charged on the phone or card matches the purchase amount.
  • Check the debts on your card in your account to have better control of the transactions you make.
  • Finally, check with your bank about the possibility of sending you an SMS message whenever a debit is made on the card associated with your mobile phone.
